Custom-made Mokumegane wedding bands with distinctive woodgrain patterns

Journey is a jewellery workshop based in Nago, Okinawa, specialising in bespoke wedding bands and engagement rings.

Drawing on Mokumegane, a traditional Japanese metalworking technique, we place great importance on creating original designs that are uniquely yours.

No two Mokumegane patterns can ever be the same. At Journey, we believe that this sense of chance and individuality is what makes Mokumegane so beautiful as a wedding band—an unrepeatable pattern that reflects the one-of-a-kind journey you share together.

1.What is Mokumegane?

Mokumegane: A Traditional Japanese Metalworking Technique

Mokumegane is a traditional Japanese metalworking technique in which multiple layers of different metals are fused together to create patterns resembling the grain of wood.

Originally developed during the Edo period for decorative sword fittings such as tsuba (sword guards), Mokumegane has evolved into a highly regarded craft known for both its rarity and distinctive beauty.

Today, its unique patterns and exceptional craftsmanship are celebrated in wedding bands, engagement rings, fine jewellery, and luxury timepieces.

A Beauty Shaped by Layers of Craftsmanship and Chance

Mokumegane patterns are not etched or applied to the surface. Instead, they emerge through the process of carving, forging, and shaping a laminated billet made from multiple layers of different metals.

The final pattern is influenced by countless factors, including the combination of metals, the way they are layered, and the techniques used to shape and carve them. Even when the same materials and methods are used, it is impossible to reproduce exactly the same pattern twice.

This element of unpredictability—beyond complete control—is what gives Mokumegane its distinctive beauty and character.

A Rich Variety of Expressions, Each Uniquely Its Own

The beauty of Mokumegane is shaped not only by the combination of metals, but also by the way the layers are constructed, carved, and finished.

Some patterns resemble the gentle flow of natural wood grain, while others evoke the movement of waves or display crisp, modern lines with striking contrast. Through subtle variations in technique, Mokumegane offers an extraordinary range of visual expressions.

It is this combination of creative possibility and natural unpredictability that gives rise to a piece that is truly one of a kind.

2.Why Choose Mokumegane for Wedding Bands?

Wedding bands are pieces of jewellery that are worn every day and cherished for a lifetime. Increasingly, couples are seeking something that reflects their own story rather than choosing something identical to everyone else.

The appeal of Mokumegane lies in more than its rarity. Its one-of-a-kind patterns, the harmony created by different metals coming together, and the way its character evolves over time all resonate deeply with the meaning of marriage itself.

At Journey, we believe these qualities are what make Mokumegane such a meaningful choice for wedding bands—symbolising a relationship that is unique, enduring, and shaped by a journey shared together.

Design | Uniquely Yours

One of the defining characteristics of Mokumegane is that, rather than selecting a pre-designed pattern, each couple's pattern is created from the ground up as part of the making process.

The combination of metals, the structure of the layers, and the chosen finish all have a significant influence on the final appearance. Even when the same techniques are used, no two patterns will ever be exactly alike.

As a result, every ring develops its own unique character, allowing each couple to wear a pattern that is truly their own.

Story | Where Two Individualities Become One

Mokumegane is a technique that brings different metals together in harmony within a single ring.

Gold, platinum, silver, and other metals—each with their own distinct qualities—are layered and fused to create patterns and expressions that could never be achieved with a single material alone.

Different elements come together without losing their individual character, forming something entirely new. In many ways, this reflects the journey of a relationship itself: two individuals, each unique, building a shared life while remaining true to who they are.

Time | Evolving Together Through Time

The patterns of Mokumegane gradually develop character as they are worn over time.

Small scratches from daily life and the natural effects of wear subtly enhance the depth and contrast of the pattern, allowing the ring to evolve with each passing year. As time accumulates, so too does the unique character of the ring.

Perhaps this is not unlike a relationship itself. Marriage is not something that begins fully formed, but something that deepens over time, shaped by shared experiences and the willingness to embrace change.

Mokumegane carries a beauty that grows alongside that journey, quietly accompanying the years you spend together.

3. Journey and the Story of Mokumegane

My Journey to Mokumegane

Artisan
Asato Philip Tanaka

Although I was born and raised in Sydney, I grew up with Japanese parents and a strong connection to my Japanese heritage.

When I first encountered Mokumegane, a traditional Japanese metalworking technique, during a university lecture in Sydney, I felt an immediate connection to my roots. As I began experimenting with the technique myself, I became increasingly fascinated by its beauty, complexity, and expressive potential.

My desire to learn more eventually led me to Japan, where I enrolled in an art university and began a deeper journey into the study and practice of Mokumegane.

For me, Mokumegane is more than a craft. It is a reflection of my identity, my heritage, and the journey that has shaped who I am today.

What I Hope to Share Through Mokumegane

Different metals, each with their own colour, character, and properties, come together under carefully balanced conditions to create patterns that can never be repeated.

These patterns cannot be fully controlled or perfectly recreated. Yet it is within this unpredictability and uniqueness that I find so much of life's fascination and the beauty of the world itself.

To me, marriage is the coming together of two individual identities. Each person brings their own character, experiences, and strengths, and together they create something entirely unique.

Through Mokumegane, I hope to honour the individuality of each couple and express a journey that belongs to them alone—a path that no one else can walk in quite the same way.

Journey's Approach to Mokumegane

Today, interest in Mokumegane continues to grow around the world, and many brands now offer jewellery featuring this remarkable technique. Much of the modern production, however, focuses on achieving consistency and repeatability in the pattern.

At Journey, we take a different approach.

We believe that the true beauty of Mokumegane lies in its uniqueness. Rather than reproducing existing patterns, we create a one-of-a-kind design for each couple, ensuring that every ring carries its own distinct character and story.

Our philosophy is simple:

One Billet, One Ring.

From a single laminated billet, we create a single ring, allowing each pattern to exist only once. Combined with a wide range of metal combinations and design possibilities, this approach enables us to create a Mokumegane wedding band that is uniquely yours.

A pattern that belongs to no one else.
A ring that reflects only your journey together.

A Message to Couples in Okinawa

My journey has taken me through Australia, Japan, and many other parts of the world before eventually leading me to Okinawa.

There is something about Okinawa that feels both familiar and unique. While it is undeniably part of Japan, it also carries its own distinct identity. At times, I even find echoes of Australia here—in the relaxed pace of life, the connection to nature, and the openness of the people.

Okinawa is a place where different cultures, histories, and roots have met and blended over generations. It is a place shaped by diversity, yet grounded in harmony.

Because of this, I believe there is a deep connection between the spirit of Okinawa and the philosophy of Mokumegane. Both celebrate the beauty that emerges when different elements come together without losing their individuality.

If this story resonates with you, I would be delighted to welcome you to the workshop and share the world of Mokumegane with you.

4. The Bespoke Mokumegane Process

Ordering a bespoke Mokumegane ring may seem complicated at first, but the process is often much simpler than people expect.

At our workshop, we have a wide range of samples that you can see and handle in person. Using these as a starting point, we take the time to listen carefully to your ideas, preferences, and the story you would like your rings to tell.

In most cases, your original design can be created by deciding on just three key elements. We will guide you through each step and offer flexible design suggestions to suit both your idea and your budget, so you can enjoy the process with confidence.

Choose Your Metals

Choose from a variety of metals, including yellow gold, white gold, platinum, palladium, and silver, and select the combination that best suits your preferred colours and overall aesthetic.

Choose the Width and Shape

The width and profile of the ring—whether rounded or flat—will influence how the Mokumegane pattern appears.
Subtle changes in shape can highlight different aspects of the pattern, creating a softer, more organic look or a cleaner, more defined expression. We can also guide you toward options that best showcase the style of pattern you prefer.

Choose Your Gemstones and Stamp

Decide on the stamp you would like to include, such as your names, initials, or a meaningful date.
You may choose to keep the design beautifully simple, or make it even more personal by adding a diamond or birthstone. These finishing touches help create a ring that is uniquely yours and rich with meaning.

Can I choose the Mokumegane pattern?

Yes, we can discuss the overall direction and character of the Mokumegane pattern with you.
